Biography
Zahra Newman has built an extensive list of theatre, television and film credits. Awards include an AACTA for Best New Talent, a Sydney Theatre Award for The Book of Mormon, a Green Room Award, CGA Award and multiple Helpmann nominations.
Theatre credits include the recently celebrated one woman show Dracula for Sydney Theatre Company; other STC credits include, Fences, A Raisin in the Sun, Julius Caesar, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Love and Information. Zahra also toured the highly successful Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill for MTC/Belvoir/STCSA. She has also been seen in Random, The Blind Giant is Dancing, Ivanov, The Government Inspector, Private Lives for Belvoir; Miss Julie, The Effect, The Mountain Top, The Cherry Orchard, Menagerie, Clybourne Park, The Drowsy Chaperone and Richard III for Melbourne Theatre Company; Girl from the North Country for GWB and the critically acclaimed Wake in Fright for Malthouse/Sydney Opera House, which she also co-created.
Zahra’s work as a singer is also well-established including concerts such as Funny Girl with Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Actors Benevolent Fund Charity Concert, and Stonnington City Christmas Carols. Further voice work includes the current ANZ Falcon campaign, Anthology of Jamaican Poetry for ABC’s Poetica, Blue Lake for Radio National History Listen, and Breathing Space sound installation exhibited at the National Museum of Australia and awarded 2024 work of the year at the Art Music Awards.
Zahra Newman’s film credits include Truth, I Met A Girl, Long Story Short, Thirteen Lives as well as the short film Our Haunt. Her next project is the upcoming feature Addition which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival. Television credits include Netflix’s Pieces of Her, Spreadsheet, ABC’s Austin and Diary of an Uber Driver, Sisters, Foxtel’s Wentworth, Neighbours, Rosehaven, Childhood’s End and Rush. Zahra was most recently seen as Leila in the SBS anthology series Erotic Stories.
