Three words that describe you as a person
WARM, OBSERVANT and ADAPTIVE.
What do you love the most about being a voice over artist?
Physicality can really help bring out the right tone for a brief. On one end, I’m gesturing, walking on the spot or ready to throw hands in a make-believe argument. Other times, it’s changing between stoic or hunched stance, being stationary or close and intimate with a mic – it’s all rather theatrical in some way.
Describe the moments you decided to become a voice over artist, how did this evolve?
In an odd twist of fate, voice over found me! I had done a commercial that was seen by Rachel from EM Voices, who had reached out to folks behind the scenes to get in touch with me. I met with her, was deemed a good fit and thus began my VO career! My comedic sensibilities have helped me voice many fun characters, but I’ve been given opportunities to do serious and grounded briefs, as well as fine-tune my ‘speaking quickly without sounding like you’re rushing’ voice.
What makes a good voice artist?
Knowing your voice. There is skill in imitating many popular voices in media, but there’s even more skill in harnessing your own, knowing what that sounds like, and being able to bring that to the reads that you do.
Who inspires you?
Rather than individuals, I find I’m more inspired by the traits of a person, or by the things they say. I find those who speak with confidence about the things they say, even if they’re wrong, to be quite endearing. And those who listen – really listen. It’s one to hear but it’s another to have a comprehension of what’s been said and an interest in sonics behind it. Maybe it’s the VO artist in me. If anything, my parents for putting up with me and my antics after all these years.
What would be your dream gig?
My dream gig would be either to be a companion on Dr Who or part of a division of Torchwood (hello Big Finish Audio if you’re reading this!) I like the idea of a bunch of mates travelling through time, occasionally saving the world. Sydney recently had an NCIS spin-off – surely a Torchwood Sydney division can follow suit?
